Maui Poems

Poetry is a snapshot of life framed in words. During our 10-day stay on Maui, Hawaii, I wrote a quick poem each day to commemorate the trip, spending no more than 30 minutes on any poem. We rented an ohana house in Pukalani, located halfway up Haleakala, and explored the island each day -- from Lahaina to Hana -- with Timberley’s cousin, Anastasia Gilliam, who then lived on Maui and worked as lead singer for the rock band Voodoo Suns (now with Portland’s Butterfly Breakdown).

Here’s one of the shorter poems:

SUNDAY MORNING (4 A.M.)

Haleakala is calling us

To its summit

On this Sunday morning

Darkness without

Hunger within

Worries about problems

Dented fenders

Unresolved tensions

Blisters on my heels

Getting to the top

Of the world

By sunrise
